A Pivot from Paton

Sep 30, 2026  ·  ~3 min read

For a decade or more, the tide’s been turning from 20th century systems of production to 21st. Likewise, formal education and workforce training are experiencing upheavals and resets nonstop. New days dawning.

Watching the reindustrialize summit gather momentum for the past three years, seeing El Segundo burn bright, while AI’s growth pushed more and more software experts into hardware, confirmed that a new age of hardware and manufacturing is being born, and along with it lively communities of operators and educators passionate about entrepreneurship and physical innovation across Canada and the US.

Observing all of this, it really did feel like peer learning and accelerated educational opportunities were the missing pieces in this production puzzle. Our industrial ecosystems clearly have most of what they need to mutate and succeed, but in 2026 we still seem to be missing cheap messy places to make or assemble cool things, learn stuff quickly from others, or just meet up and jam a bit, without having to conform to the appearance or expectations of niche technical communities. All of this holds back our potentials and limits our exposure to new ideas, ultimately inhibiting new company formation.

For a year or more I was sitting with this question:

What if we put learning on an equal footing with product and service development, and pioneered the spaces and networks capable of taking these insights to the highest levels possible, so that the acceleration of technology and economic opportunity that is being widely discussed has a much stronger foundation to build upon?

This past August after keeping tabs on Hamilton real estate listings, I saw an ideal little mechanics garage listed for rent and decided that come what may, I’d start pursuing the creation of a new hub that could serve locals and be a harbinger of something broader.

The site was 4 Breadalbane, former long-time home to Paton’s Auto Service. I toured the space, tweeted about the intentions, and got several expressions of support that confirmed we are heading in the right direction with this idea. Demand is real and there is emerging agreement on the need to break out of our maker, hacker, engineering, and Discord silos we’ve been enjoying, and to begin embarking full force into the wild frontiers that are knocking very loudly on our doors.

The Paton Hall project didn’t work out but the public response confirmed that an earlier business concept could better support these intentions short and long term. The accounts and research already performed for a “Niagara Assembly” company were revived. The more formal concept for “NA” could now be anchored in the ground-level members-focused framework that the push for Paton helped give real shape to.

Now, with the notion of Members at the forefront and the region’s performance and identity providing for us the necessary levels of future social and financial support, we were in a position to pull something off for our home city and the wider region. If done well, we might even create a business and technology model for others to imitate that can strengthen their regions, too. With that possibility of continental impact in mind, we’re treating the whole thing like an open source project whose operating code is public. The roadmap isn’t put together yet and of course endless testing lays ahead to discover what works.

The posts that follow in START Issue 1 outline the plans so far to give ourselves the best possible footing to succeed. Everything is flexible and open to adaptation based on who and what shows up on the timeline of life as we meet, gather, invest and build together.
