Gage

Gage is an open standard for creating industrial software and systems.

Early stage. This page will grow as the standard is written and published. We would rather say so than dress it up.

Why an open standard

Industrial software has to work across machines, vendors and decades. When the rules are open, anyone can build to them, tools from different makers fit together, and no one is locked in. Industry already knows this: the standards it leans on most are open ones.

Open standards already at work in industry

For context, and not part of Gage:

StandardWhat it does
OPC
Open Platform Communications
Standards for communicating real-time plant data between control devices from different manufacturers.
PLCopenSpecifications and implementations around IEC 61131-3, the PLC programming languages, to reduce cost in industrial engineering.
O-PAS
Open Process Automation Standard
Covers the components of an industrial automation system: hardware, network, system software, application software and the data model.

Sources: OPC, PLCopen, O-PAS (ISA).

Where Gage fits

Gage is our contribution to that tradition: a standard, open from the start, for the people who make industrial software and the systems it runs. It sits alongside our other tools. Environments are where such software gets built, and HeavyMap is one of the systems that could use it.

Take part

A standard is only worth something if people use it and shape it. If you build industrial software, work with the systems it runs on, or care about open standards, we would like your help. Find us on GitHub.
