Erie, Pennsylvania is the reachable gateway to the rest of the Midwest: a Lake Erie port city on I-90, about a hundred miles from both Buffalo and Cleveland, where the road, the rail and the water all turn west. It is close enough to Hamilton and Buffalo to be part of one corridor, and it opens onto the Great Lakes heartland beyond.
Aspirational. We have no presence in Erie yet. This page says why we want relationships, partnerships and resources there, and what we hope to build with them. Erie is in Pennsylvania, which the Census counts as Northeast; we call it a gateway because of the routes that lead west from it.
| Route | Where it leads |
|---|---|
| I-90 east | Buffalo, about 80 to 90 miles away, then the Peace Bridge and Ontario. |
| I-90 west | Cleveland, about 90 to 100 miles away, and on along the same interstate toward Chicago. |
| I-79 south | Pittsburgh, about 120 miles, and a link to I-80 for Youngstown, Akron and points east and west. |
| I-86 | The Southern Tier of New York. |
| Rail | Norfolk Southern and CSX main lines run east–west through Erie County. |
| Water | Pennsylvania’s only commercial lake port, the region’s import and export link to the world through the St. Lawrence Seaway, with rail and highway access from the docks. It includes a foreign-trade zone, where companies can use special procedures to reduce or eliminate duty on imports. |
| Air | Erie International Airport. |
Follow the lake and the interstate west from Hamilton, and each stop has a job:
| Stop | Its part in the corridor |
|---|---|
| Hamilton | Our home base and first Hub. |
| Fort Erie | The Ontario end of the Peace Bridge, and the place to learn how the border works. |
| Greater Buffalo | The American anchor: manufacturing scale and a working gateway. |
| Dunkirk, NY | A stepping stone on the lakeshore, and a candidate for storage and staging. |
| Erie, PA | The door west: port, rail and interstate toward Cleveland and the Midwest. |
Erie’s manufacturing is more varied than its reputation. The region makes more than a tenth of the nation’s plastics, and its steel and plastics plants are described as smaller and more agile than the giants that once dominated. Locomotive assembly (Wabtec), health care, insurance and universities are the other big employers.
| Group | Organizations |

| Port and freight | The Erie-Western PA Port Authority, and Foreign-Trade Zone 247, which covers designated locations in northwest Pennsylvania. |
| Economic development | The Erie Regional Chamber and Growth Partnership, which leads innovation and entrepreneurship work in Erie County alongside Penn State Behrend. |
| Universities | Penn State Behrend, whose Plastics Engineering Technology program is a well-known talent pipeline, and which opened a $16.5 million Advanced Manufacturing and Innovation Center; Gannon University; Mercyhurst University; Edinboro University. |
| Startups and prototyping | The Erie Technology Incubator at Gannon; Behrend’s Innovation Commons for product design and prototyping; and the Northwest Pennsylvania Innovation Beehive Network, a collaboration among the universities and the county library. Ben Franklin Technology Partners of Central and Northern Pennsylvania run the Erie TechCelerator. |
| Manufacturers | Wabtec’s locomotive plant, and a large cluster of plastics, tooling and molding companies. |
In June 2026, Ontario Premier Doug Ford and Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro signed a memorandum of understanding in Toronto to increase collaboration in areas including energy, critical minerals, manufacturing and life sciences, and to set up a working group. It is a government arrangement, not ours, but it shows attention to the Ontario–Pennsylvania link at the highest level.
