Western New York is the rest of the American half of our region, from the Lake Erie shore to Rochester and the Finger Lakes. It is where the scale of the U.S. market, a deep optics, photonics and microelectronics heritage, and real gaps in the workforce all meet.
Aspirational. We have no presence in Western New York yet. This page says why we want relationships, partnerships and resources across it, and what we hope to build with them. For the Buffalo–Niagara core, see Greater Buffalo.
Both of these are true at once. The New York State Department of Labor reports that private-sector jobs in the Western New York region rose by 4,700, or 0.9%, to 527,900 in the year ending January 2026, while manufacturing lost 2,000 jobs. The region is not idle. It is drifting out of some of the work that makes things. That is the argument for building here.
| Where | What is there | Why it matters to us |
|---|---|---|
| Lake Erie shore and Chautauqua County Dunkirk, Fredonia, Jamestown |
The I-90 corridor between Buffalo and Cleveland, the Lake Erie shoreline, a county industrial development agency, and a technology incubator at SUNY Fredonia. | A possible storage and shipping staging point on the U.S. side. It is a logistics idea, not an electronics cluster, and the economics need studying first. |
| Rochester and the Finger Lakes | The New York Photonics cluster of more than 150 companies, a test, assembly and packaging facility run by AIM Photonics, and universities including RIT and the University of Rochester. Electronics manufacturers such as REDCOM in Victor and Creation Technologies in Newark and Rochester. | A precision, defence-grade and photonics ecosystem far beyond what any single small maker has. A place to learn what the high standard looks like, and to find where our training and Members could complement it. |
| The wider upstate corridor Syracuse, Ithaca, the Southern Tier |
The NY SMART I-Corridor tech hub, Micron’s planned Syracuse fab, a $200 million workforce program, and the microelectronics heritage of Binghamton and Endicott. | Semiconductor investment on a very large scale, and a wave of demand for suppliers and skilled people that will reach Buffalo and Rochester too. |
| Group | Organizations |
|---|---|
| State and regional development | Empire State Development; Greater Rochester Enterprise; the NY SMART I-Corridor consortium; CenterState CEO in Syracuse; county industrial development agencies, including Chautauqua and Ontario counties. |
| Photonics and imaging | New York Photonics, the regional cluster organization, and AIM Photonics. |
| Universities and colleges | Rochester Institute of Technology, the University of Rochester, Monroe Community College, Finger Lakes Community College, SUNY Fredonia, Binghamton University. |
| Electronics manufacturers | REDCOM, a family-owned communications maker in Victor that offers electronics manufacturing services certified to ISO 9001 and AS9100D, and Creation Technologies, which acquired IEC Electronics of Newark in 2021. |
